 Jorgelina Orfila, Assistant Professor, Art History, was selected to present her paper  ”A Painter’s Collection”: The Chester Dale Collection of Modern French Art at a symposium, entitled The American Artist as Collector: From the Enlightenment to Postwar Era  at the Center for the History of Collecting in America in New York City.  She has been working on the Chester Dale collection.  ”My paper analyzed Maud Dale’s installation of the collection in this residence,” explained Ms Orfila.

The two pictures show the building, one in 1938 when it housed the Chester Dale Collection and as it is now, owned by Elaine Rosenberg. Dale sold it early in the twentieth century to Ms. Rosenberg’s father-in-law, the legendary French art dealer Paul Rosenberg. According to the Museum of Modern Art, “a key figure in the art world in the 1920s and ’30s, Paul Rosenberg (1881-1959) supported and guided the careers of artists such as Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, Fernand Léger, and Henri Matisse, exhibiting them alongside the Impressionist and Post-Impressionist masters of the day, and placing their works in the most renowned museums and private collections in the world.”

Most recently Mrs. Rosenberg has promised the archives of Paul Rosenberg to the Museum of Modern Art as a bequest of hers and her late husband Alexandre Rosenberg (Paul’s son). Ms Orfila said,  ”I visited her. She (Elaine Rosenberg) is truly a great lady who gave me valuable information. The papers of the art gallery were seized by the Nazis but she recuperated them and will donate them to the archives of MoMA.”
